Sentinel-Echo wins consecutive Newspaper of the Year award

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Sentinel-Echo won its second consecutive Newspaper of the Year award in the division for non-dailies in Community Newspaper Holdings Inc.’s annual journalism competition.
Judges noted its attractive design and efforts to dig deeper into topics important to its readers.
“We are so honored to again be recognized with such a prestigious award,” News Editor Allison Altizer Johnston said. “I think it is reflective of the staff’s hard work and creative ideas and our paper’s commitment to its readers and its community. I couldn’t be prouder.”
Results of the contest recognizing individual and team journalism at CNHI newspapers during 2007 were announced Friday. Thirteen senior editors considered nearly 750 entries submitted in three circulation divisions. The judges named winners and finalists in 29 categories.
Willie Sawyers, publisher of The Sentinel-Echo, was named Editorial Writer of the Year in the Non-daily newspapers division.
Associate Editor Derek Micah Arm-strong was named Designer of the Year for the second consecutive year and Sports Editor Denis House was named Photographer of the Year.
Staff Writer Tara Kaprowy led the way for The Sentinel-Echo with two awards, being named Reporter of the Year and Features Writer of the Year.
Based in Birmingham, CNHI operates daily and non-daily newspapers in more than 150 communities throughout the United States.
