Flav-O-Rich recognized for help during ice storm

When the ice storm left thousands of Kentuckians without power or water for several days, Flav-O-Rich Dairy in London was one of six milk processing plants who answered the state’s call and began bottling water.

The Kentucky Department for Public Health recognized the efforts of Flav-O-Rich and the other milk processors who churned out about 8,000 bottles of water to help people across the commonwealth.

Flav-O-Rich, Louis Trauth Dairy in Campbell County, Southern Belle Dairy in Pulaski County, Turner Dairy in Fulton County and Winchester Farms Dairy in Clark County received the public service award at the Kentucky State Fair.

“We are truly thankful to our dairy plants for bottling and donating water for people affected by emergency situations such as the ice storm, flood and Hurricane Ike storm damage,” said Guy Delius, director of the division for public health, protection and safety.

In addition to the processing plants, dairy producers Jim Sidebottom of Green County, Eddie Gibson of Kenton County and Darrell Carlton of Lincoln County were recognized for their parts in responding to the emergency.

Gwenda Bond, of the Department for Public Health, said the dairies provided water for about a week until FEMA could respond to the situation.
