Union College, Center for Rural Development address Chamber

The guest speaker at the London-Laurel County Chamber of Commerce’s luncheon meeting was Community Liaison and Sales Associate Amy Stroud from the Center for Rural Development in Somerset.

Stroud told the group about the history of the center.

The non-profit center was started in 1996 by U.S. Rep. Harold “Hal” Rogers and serves 42 counties, she said. The programs provided by the center deal specifically with four main services: leadership, education and training; arts and culture; technology; and public safety.

Stroud also discussed the business and technology services provided by the center.

“We can take these newsletters you all do and put them on-line,” she said. “This decreases the cost and you can save so much money. You can even put in videos.”

Also speaking during the meeting was Union College President David Derossett.

He said there had been many changes made at the college in Barbourville and invited everyone to tour the campus.

Derossett said the London Center offers bachelor’s degrees in business administration, business management, and psychology; and a master’s degree in clinical psychology.

The Chamber also reminded members of the following upcoming events:

• June 27: free open house at the London-Corbin Airport from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with military and civilians planes, food, a car show and inflatables for the kids.

• July 4: Crusin’ On Main.

• July 4: Red, White & Boom celebration at College Park.

• July 1: Some Gave All motorcycle rally in honor of county residents who have been killed in the war on terror, 4 p.m. at the Laurel County Courthouse.

• July 7 through 11: Laurel County Fair at the fairgrounds.

• Aug. 15: Laurel County Shrine Club Bluegrass and Bluegrass Gospel Festival, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the Laurel County Fairground.
