LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
The Laurel County Historical Society has Hafendorfer’s and Owens’ books as well as much other information on the Civil War in Laurel County. The best way to research the Battle of Wildcat Mountain is to visit the site itself and see the exhibits there. Thanks to the Camp Wildcat Preservation Foundation this can easily be achieved. You’ll want to visit this organization’s website at www.wildcatbattlefield.org .
The Laurel Home Guard stages a reenactment of the battle each year on the third weekend of October. This year’s event is scheduled for October 18, 19 and 20. Read more about this on the website of the Guard: www.wildcatreenactment.com
The Battle of Wildcat Mountain was not the only Civil War battle in Laurel County. I’ll write about the Battle of London next week.
