Direct Kick: Too much hype surrounding NFL draft

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Did you know the NFL draft was last week? Of course you did. How could you not with ESPN reminding us every five seconds and with their endless draft previews and predictions.

Something that always puzzled me is when these so-called “draft gurus” issue grades to teams following the draft based on who they drafted and their needs.

Their needs I can understand. But how can you logically give a grade for a draft pick that has never played a down in the NFL? Let’s face it folks, draft day is all about speculation and hopes. Indianapolis hopes that Andrew Luck can fill Peyton Manning’s shoes. Washington hopes that Robert Griffin III is the next coming of Joe Theismann. Etc., etc. And checking ESPN.com today they already have a peek ahead at the 2013 NFL draft’s top prospects.

Wow, talk about overkill.

I think Cleveland got a good draft in running back Trent Richardson out of Alabama. And Jacksonville, with the No. 5 pick, got a good wide receiver in Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon.

But really, this draft was all about Luck and Griffin. And the drama was taken out of the picks days before the draft when Indy announced it was going to pick Luck No. 1 overall. Made things kinda anti-climatic.

When the Redskins picked RG3, the first thing you heard from many sports pundits was the comparison to Cam Newton and Michael Vick. In case you didn’t know, all three are African-Americans.

You would think in today’s society we would have grown past dividing people based on the color of their skin. But we haven’t. Why compare RG3 to just Newton or Vick? His style is similar to former San Francisco quarterback Steve Young.

Maybe one day we will realize that the color of skin doesn’t matter.
