You Get The Picture: Nostalgia for a nap

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Amusty scent of aging literature and history muffled the sound of students weaving in and out of bookshelves.  A hit of sunlight gradually crept through a yellow window pane and onto the scratchy chair I dozed in with my German language textbook cracked open.

Oh, how I miss the university library and it’s hidden quarters clearly made for sleep between classes.  I remember the day I meandered through the entire library searching for the perfect spot for hours, and then--eureka!  It was as if a choir of angels burst into song, I had found my little niche of paradise away from the world on the fourth floor with a penthouse view. I had entered the American Civil War section.

Apparently, no one reads about the Civil War anymore, or deceased presidents.  But I took full advantage of my discovery, at least three times a week.  “Eins, zwei, drei”….doze.

The art of napping is a divine characteristic of mine.  The only problem is that I associate any form of reading or studying as pre-game for sleep.  I began napping in the first grade, not in class of course, I’ve only accomplished that on a couple occasions after a late night of, ‘ahem’ studying.

On days that I became an out of control child who felt as if all I needed to do was whine and cry for no reason, my parents would shut me in my room to nap.  Now that’s some nature versus nurture psychology at play.  Years later, I would transition my bedroom napping angst to the deck outside during sum

mers with my cat.  There’s something about the warm embrace of the summer sun that drugs you into an instant sleep.

Like fine wine my napping became a more appetizing endeavor.  Naps were the re-start button to an awful day of class or work.  I still indulge in the miracle of sleep on occasion, but not as often as I should.  I just cannot find the perfect place to settle down, or a way to relieve all of my current stresses.  Supposedly it’s true what “they” say, when you find something good hold on to it.  I don’t believe purchasing a plethora of dirty old books about Abraham Lincoln and the secession of the Confederacy would do the trick either.

In conclusion, I feel with great passion that a trip to the university library is in store for my near future. I I just hope the Civil War section hasn’t moved on without me and found another admirer.
