My Point Is...Joke’s on me, joke’s on you

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — My “beat” as a reporter often places me in positions where I am the sole female in the crowd, where  jokes are often played at my expense. Such was the case last week

While doing my specified duties at the judicial center, I spotted Albert “Abby” Hale, Public Safety Director, who is not commonly seen there. I immediately questioned why he was there.

I learned, much to my chagrin, that an incident had happened in the courthouse earlier that morning — while I was covering another event. Abby said an unspecified white substance had been located in an office in the judicial center, and the entire building had been shut down and the streets closed while the matter was resolved.

“You didn’t hear about it?” he asked.

Horrified that I had missed such a major story, I asked if anyone from our paper had been there, and the answer was even more horrifying — I was told that Carl Keith Greene from the Corbin Times-Tribune had gotten the exclusive story and no one from The Sentinel-Echo had even shown up.

Having been the brunt of jokes in the past, I asked for verification from the court security personnel, who were standing nearby.  They played right along with his entire story.

Just before I hit mass panic stage, Abby and the rest of those guys burst into laughter, with Abby saying he was just joking with me. Totally humiliated, I asked one of the security personnel to loan me his gun, but with that denial, I just reminded each of them about the rules of payback.

So, here it is, guys. Think about that the next time!
