Direct Kick: Time to grow up Johnny Football

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — So Johnny Football isn’t pleased with certain aspects of his life, eh? Sorry dude, but I’m not feeling you.

Texas A & M quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel took to everyone’s favorite egotistical device, Twitter, to vent his frustration with the following two tweets: “Bulls — like tonight is a reason why I can’t wait to leave college station...whenever it may be.” After he deleted that tweet, he followed it up with “Don’t ever forget that I love A&M with all of my heart, but please please walk a day in my shoes.”

Welcome to the big time world of athletics.

It seems Manziel isn’t happy with the constant attention he has been receiving since emerging as a star last season en route to becoming the first freshman to ever win the Heisman. Along the way, he picked up the nickname “Johnny Football,” which he later trademarked. He dates a model (Sarah Savage), starred in a country music video by Granger Smith, is seen at other high profile sporting events, and has thrown out the first pitch at a couple of Major League baseball games. Plus, barring any unfortunate injury, he will be a first round (possibly No. 1) pick in the NFL.

Yeah, I feel really sorry for you.

If you think it’s bad now, you haven’t seen anything yet. As time goes on, and you continue to be a football star, your life isn’t yours anymore. You’re a celebrity. Deal with it. And don’t try and convince us you don’t like it. You do. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t be on Twitter or appearing in music videos.

So you are the big man on campus right now. I’m sure any of your teammates or any “regular” student at A & M would gladly trade places with you. Heck, I’d trade places with you.

I realize that you are still a young man, not even 21 yet. But don’t go whining when things aren’t the way you wish they would be. NFL teams are watching. They know what you can do on the field; now it’s time to show them how you are off the field.

So far, the NHL playoffs haven’t disappointed. The first two games took overtimes to decide, with Chicago winning game one in three OTs, while Boston took game two needing just one overtime, then won again Monday night to take a 2-1 series lead.

If you haven’t watched, do yourself a favor and tune in tonight (Wednesday) for game four. You might just become a fan.

Over in the NBA, San Antonio and Miami are hooked up in a pretty good battle. The Spurs have been one of the most dominate teams in the past 10 years but never get any credit, especially Tim Duncan. Guess they just aren’t as flashy as some of the media darlings.

Many people are predicting that LeBron James will soon be regarded as the best player in history, usurping Michael Jordan.  And he may. But right now he’s not.

The main difference between the two: Jordan made everyone around him better. James has yet to be able to do that. He had to go to Miami and join up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in order to win his first title. He failed at Cleveland where he was unable to do what Jordan did with the Bulls, and that is to bring out the best in his teammates, something Jordan was able to do in his time in Chicago.

Just my thoughts.
