You Get The Picture: Fall is my favorite time of year

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Warm fluffy pumpkin scones and freshly churned cider, colorful leaves and warm woolen blankets — these are a few of my favorite things.  Out of all the seasons of the year, autumn is by far the finest and tastiest of them all.

Some may say the dying leaves are depressing, but I see their bright exuberant death as tiny bursts of joy.  The pungent stench of decay may turn some noses away, but I turn mine towards the sky with deep inhalation.  The scent of fall is unique, and to me a familiar reminder of a new year to come.

Walking suddenly transforms into a leaf crunching bonanza and they’re all mine for the taking!  Baking begins to make sense again because of its house-warming benefits.  So bring on the scones and muffin mixes, shoot, I might even bake a cake.

Ruby red apples are ripe and ready for the picking.  A family quest to the local apple orchard is always bliss, because the return home is without fail marked by the affable sharing of crisp apple pie with cider.  Bonfires with friends commence with stories shared of a summer well spent.  Meanwhile, laughter cracks as the embers fly and s’mores are made as the marshmallows blaze.

Cozy blankets become a daily retreat from the world with freshly brewed coffee resting between my palms.  Nothing says fall like a good afternoon siesta followed by an engrossing open book.

While some would argue Christmas is the best season of all, but I’m all about the rising events that lead up to the pinnacle of all holidays.  As the fog lifts over treetops every morning creating a dreamy golden haze, I’m reminded of God’s magnificence and each passing year He’s freely given to us.
