LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Kirk Mays continued his quest of keeping the roadways safe with three DUI arrests last week.

The first came last Thursday night with the arrest of 54-year-old Kenneth Kent of South Ky. 1223 in Corbin. Mays arrested Kent on West Greendale Street in Corbin after Kent was involved in a traffic accident. Kent admitted to drinking a pint of whiskey prior to the accident. He was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence  and reckless driving and lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.

The early morning hours of Friday resulted in another arrest on Cherry Street in Corbin in which 31-year-old Phillip B. Hedrick was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence, operating on a suspended operator's license and reckless driving after Hedrick was involved in a traffic accident. Hedrick, of London Avenue in Corbin, was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center following his arrest.

On Saturday, Mays arrested 26-year-old Stacie Reyes of River Road in Williamsburg after he observed her vehicle weaving along the roadway on Ky. 770 around 3:30 a.m. Mays conducted a traffic stop and determined Reyes was under the influence. She was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence and reckless driving.

A fourth DUI arrest was made by Deputy Robbie Grimes last Friday evening just before 6 p.m. when 60-year-old Wendall Smith of Somerset Road in London fled the scene of an accident. Smith allegedly hid in a briar thicket near the scene of the accident, eight miles west of London. Located a short time later, Smith was arrested and charged with DUI and an outstanding Laurel County bench warrant. Assisting at the scene were Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter and Deputy Josh Scott, officers with the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife and Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County.
