Two arrested for DUI when trying to avoid safety checkpoint

Laurel County Sheriff’s Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter along with Deputy Larry Parrott were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint on Byrley Road, 13 miles south of London, on Friday, Dec. 13 at 1:17 p.m. when a black Jeep Cherokee apparently observed the checkpoint, slammed on its brakes, and backed up quickly to avoid the checkpoint. A passenger in the vehicle allegedly threw marijuana out the window as the vehicle backed away.

The driver told deputies, when he observed them, he tried to get away before deputies discovered he was under the influence.

The driver, Cody R. Skidmore, 18, of Clearfield Court, Corbin, was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence, possession of marijuana, careless driving, no insurance, and other traffic offenses. Also arrested was the passenger, Cody L. Vandemark, 19, of Wells Drive, Corbin, who was charged with public intoxication-controlled substances, possession of  marijuana, possession of synthetic drugs prescription controlled substances not in proper container, and tampering with physical evidence. Both were lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
