Driveway repair scammer captured

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Wells Drive in Corbin was a hubbub of activity on Wednesday afternoon as a man involved in a driveway repair scam was taken into custody.

But the arrest didn’t come without its share of investigation into the whereabouts of 56-year-old Saul Boswell.

Laurel County Sheriff’s officials were on alert for information regarding Boswell’s whereabouts since he offered to repair an elderly woman’s driveway on March 21. After performing a reportedly shoddy job, Boswell asked for payment. But the failing eyesight of the elderly woman resulted in her asking Boswell to write out a check for $48. Instead, Boswell made the check out for $4,800, then tried to cash the check at the woman’s bank.

But cautious bank tellers questioned the transaction, telling Boswell to try and cash the check at another bank next door. When Boswell appeared nervous, tellers contacted police but Boswell soon left the bank and was not located when officers arrived.

However, Detective Josh Scott later obtained information about Boswell’s location and obtained a warrant for his arrest.

Det. Scott, Lt. Chuck Johnson, Deputy Robbie Grimes, Detective Jason Back, and court security officer Patrick Harris went to Wells Drive, 10 miles south of London, just before 3 p.m. Wednesday, and heard someone running through the house. Deputies made entry into the residence but had to scuffle with Boswell before taking him into custody.

Boswell is now lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center on a bench warrant for second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and resisting arrest.

Boswell is also a suspect in a Gallatin, Tenn., case in which five people offered to do driveway repair. Steve Jones, 32, Boswell, and 29-year-old James Boswell of Keavy, 29-year-old Eric Boswell of Morristown, Tenn., and 68-year-old Henry Small of Princeton, W.Va., are wanted for an October incident in which they allegedly offered to repair a man’s driveway, and instead, used asphalt sealant on a concrete driveway, ruining the driveway in the process.

Saul Boswell, who also lists an address of Somerset Road in London, will be arraigned in Laurel District Court on Friday (today).
