Shoplifter now facing drug charges

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —

A woman jailed for shoplifting got an unexpected surprise on Tuesday when she was charged on drug-related offenses from early December.

Vicie A. Estep, 41, of Poplar Hollow Road in London, was arrested by London Police Officer Bryon Lawson on Monday morning for shoplifting items valued at less than $500.

But on Tuesday, more legal problems came when Laurel County Sheriff’s officials charged Estep with third-degree possession of a controlled substance and prescription controlled substances not in the proper container.

The additional charges stemmed from an incident on December 8 when Estep was a patient at Saint Joseph London hospital. A metal container with prescription pills were found in Estep’s possession while she was a patient in the obstetric ward. Hospital staff alerted the sheriff’s office, but when Estep was questioned, she said she had a prescription for the pills. However, Estep never produced such a prescription to back up her story.

Estep is set for a hearing on the possession charge in Laurel District Court on January 31. Currently, she is held in the Laurel County Detention Center under a $1,000 cash bond for the shoplifting charge and has a court date of February 25 for that offense.
