LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —

Thanksgiving week was not so happy for some people who spent the holiday behind bars, or facing charges stemming from illegal activity.

“Operation Drug Free Thanksgiving” began with a three-day sweep by the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office to round up drug dealers in the area.

The first phase of the roundup was launched on Monday, with seven people charged. The roundups continued on Tuesday, with a second effort by sheriff’s officials to get drug dealers off the streets during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The third roundup took place on Wednesday morning, with more arrests of known drug dealers.

“We have an ongoing drug problem in the county and we want to make sure that the people here are safe,” said Sheriff John Root. “The Thanksgiving holiday is the most heavily traveled holiday of the year and we don’t want an innocent person to be the victim in an accident or a crime from an impaired person. If we can get the drug dealers off the streets, it may save someone’s life.”

Those arrested on Tuesday’s roundup included:

• Mabel C. Mounts, 35, 43 Finley Trailer Park in London, charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, less than 10 dosage units, opiates, first offense; first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, 10 or more dosage units, opiates, first offense; first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, less than 2 grams of methamphetamine, first offense

• Travis W. Creech, 29, 1363 High Moore Road, London, probation violation for felony offense; no operator’s/moped license; failure to wear seat belts; failure to register the transfer of a motor vehicle; failure of non-owner operator to maintain required insurance/security, first offense

• Rick Reeves, 50, no address listed, first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, methamphetamine, first offense

• Arville Thomas Jr., 43, no address available, first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, methamphetamine, second offense; first-degree persistent felony offender

• Brian Cornett, 35, no address available, first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, methamphetamine, first offense

• Jimmy Martin, 34, no address listed, charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, methamphetamine, second offense; first-degree persistent felony offender

The snow and cold temperatures didn’t deter the ongoing roundup on Wednesday, with more arrests made. Arrested were:

• Jonnah D. Bowling, 41, of Hopper Creek Road in London, was charged with second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, less than 20 dosage units of a Schedule 3 drug, first offense

• Jensa Ridings, 32, 7516 Keavy Road, London, serving a bench warrant for court for contempt of court on prior charges of public intoxication of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia; serving a warrant for failure to appear in court on charges of theft by unlawful taking
