LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
A London man was indicted by the Laurel County grand jury for robbing a Taco Bell and Cash Express in Corbin earlier this year.
Jason A. Wagers, 34, of London, faces 14 counts in the armed robberies including first-degree robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree unlawful imprisonment, and being a second-degree persistent felony offender.
In the Taco Bell robbery in October Wagers, who wore a handkerchief around his mouth and a black hoodie, demanded money, forcing the manager to empty the cash registers into a take-out bag. He then forced four employees into a freezer and fled on foot. One of the employees had pushed a silent alarm. A customer came into the store and saw it deserted and the cash drawers open and empty. He also called for help. No one was injured in the robbery.
In the Cash Express robbery in June, Wagers forced a loan officer to hand him nearly $3,000 in cash and led her by gunpoint into a restroom. He then fled. Witnesses identified him as the robber.
Wagers was arrested on November 2 and charged with both robberies. Laurel County Sheriff’s Detective Jason Back found Wagers at a residence on Hidden Acres Drive hiding in a utility closet.
A gun found on south U.S. 25 by detectives is believed to have been used in at least one of the robberies.
Wagers was charged with being a second-degree persistent felony offender because he was convicted of second-degree robbery and theft by unlawful taking in 2004 in Knox County Circuit Court. He received a 10-year sentence in that conviction.
