Forgery gets woman 3 years

Repeated charges of drug violations

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — When Samantha Lindsey stood before Laurel Circuit Judge Gregory Lay last week, he had a few words of reprimand for her before imposing a three-year sentence.

Lindsey, 27, of 218 Hicks Lane in London, was in court for second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument charges from a 2010 felony indictment.

Lindsey’s attorney, Roger Gibbs of the Office of Public Advocacy, asked for an “alternative” sentence for Lindsey.

“She has a 10-day-old baby who has some medical problems,” Gibbs told Lay.

But when Lay asked what the child’s health problems were, he was not pleased with Gibbs’ answer.

“The child was born prematurely and has some problems with the lungs not developing fully,” Gibbs answered.

“When you do drugs when you are pregnant, you have problems with premature births,” Lay said, before ordering Lindsey to serve three years in jail.

She was also ordered to pay restitution of $718.37 to the victim in the case. Court costs of $155 were also imposed, which Lindsey must pay within 60 days of her release from jail.

Lindsey’s criminal record dates back to a failure to appear charge for which she was jailed on Sept. 29, 2010. Her address at that time was on Sowder Lane in London. She served five days in jail before her release after a $3,500 cash bond was posted. She was arrested again on March 11, 2011 after ordered to jail from drug court. Lindsey was released from the Laurel County Detention Center on March 21, according to jail records.

On June 29, 2012, she was again ordered back to jail from drug court, and spent another 14 days in the Laurel County facility. She spent 27 more days there after being remanded from court on Oct. 23 of last year, with the jail’s website indicating that she was released on Nov. 19.
