Woman indicted for shooting boyfriend

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —

A heated argument now has a London woman facing felony charges in Laurel Circuit Court.

Sharon Johnson, 49, of 3557 White Oak Road in London, was indicted Friday on first-degree assault, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.

Johnson was arrested on October 19 after she shot her boyfriend during an argument at her White Oak Road home. The shooting came after the boyfriend allegedly told Johnson to shoot him.

Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Scott, Sgt. Josh Gaylor and Deputy Shane Rice went to the residence, nine miles west of London, that morning where they found a man with a gunshot wound to the leg from a 9 mm pistol.

But while police and emergency workers were at the scene working with the injured man, Johnson became irate and disruptive, refusing to stay outside the home.

According to the citation, Johnson tried to go back inside the home, causing disruptions to the EMS workers and to the deputies investigating the incident. When her attempts to re-enter the residence were thwarted, Johnson — who was described as having dilated pupils and slurred speech — tried to avoid being placed into custody. She was taken to the ground by deputies to gain physical control of her. When given a sobriety test, Johnson was reportedly unable to stand steady or follow simple instructions.

She was originally charged with first-degree assault, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and public intoxication of controlled substances.

The victim was flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for the gunshot wound, while Johnson was taken to the Laurel County Detention Center. She remains incarcerated under a $50,000 cash bond and is set for a pretrial hearing in Laurel District Court on February 21.

An indictment is an accusation only and does not imply guilt or innocence.
