LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A mother and son charged with sexual offenses were set for a hearing in Laurel Circuit Court later this month.

Jose L. Morales, 19, and his mother, 40-year-old Maria Martinez-Leon, both of Meyers-Baker Road in London, are scheduled to appear in Laurel Circuit Court on February 24 to answer an indictment on sexual offenses against a 10-year-old child.

Both were set for a pretrial conference on January 27 before Circuit Judge Greg Lay. Morales faces 10 charges of first-degree rape, two  counts of first-degree sodomy and one count of first-degree  sexual abuse. Martinez-Leon is charged with 10 counts of complicity to commit rape and two counts of complicity to sodomy and one county of complicity to sexual abuse.

Both were rescheduled for a status hearing on February 24 at 9 a.m. in Laurel Circuit Court. Morales is held in the Laurel County Detention Center, where he has been since his arrest on October 27. Martinez-Leon is being held in PeeWee Valley Correctional Center for women and is set for a status hearing on the same day as her son.

The situation came to light when the London Police Department received a call that an 11-year-old child was being raped at a residence on Meyers-Baker Road. When London Police Officer Eric Stallard responded to the call, he discovered the family of the victim had just learned of the sexual relationship between their minor-age child and 18-year-old Morales.

Stallard then went to the Meyers-Baker Road residence where the incidents allegedly occurred and was met by Morales’ mother, Martinez-Leon. Questions concerning Morales’ whereabouts were met with varying stories by his mother, but were all foiled when the teen came walking up while police were at the home.

Her discrepancies regarding her son’s location landed Martinez-Leon in jail with her son for allegedly knowing of the illicit sexual relationship between her son and the child and for allowing it to occur.
