LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A wanted man, a small child and the smell of marijuana.

That’s what Laurel County Sheriff’s officials found at a residence on Earl Howard Road, 13 miles south of London, around 9:30 a.m. Friday when they went to search for a wanted person.

What they were met with was 23-year-old Jenny Johnson of Earl Howard Road in Keavy, who told Detective Jason Back and Detective Billy Madden that 37-year-old Richard Lawson was not at the residence and she did not know where he was. Lawson was wanted on felony warrants from Whitley County for first-degree assault and first-degree wanton endangerment.

But after the detectives found Lawson in the home, Johnson changed her story, stating she did not know Lawson had warrants on him.

Also inside the residence was Johnson’s 3-year-old child and the strong smell of marijuana, along with drug paraphernalia lying in plain view.

The Cabinet for Families and Children’s social workers were called to the scene to investigate and a drug screen of Johnson showed that drugs were in her system, resulting in the child being removed from the residence.

Lawson was arrested and charged with the felony warrant from Whitley County. Johnson was arrested on charges of second-degree hindering prosecution or apprehension and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
