Drunk driver nearly hits three cruisers

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —

When law enforcement officers respond to calls, they never know what could happen.

Such was the case on Friday night when three officers narrowly escaped injury from a drunk driver.

The three deputies — all driving separate cruisers — were en route to a complaint around 11 p.m. As they traveled along Ky. 192, they met a silver Jeep Latitude driving at a high rate of speed that nearly hit the police cars.

Deputy Kevin Berry turned around and pursued the vehicle, pulling it over at 11:08 p.m. on Ky. 192, nine miles west of London. The driver of the vehicle, 69-year-old Mary C. Roberts of Spring Street in London, was arrested for operating a motor vehicle under the influence and reckless driving. Jail records indicated she was also charged with having no registration receipt, failure to wear seat belts, and failure to produce an insurance card. Also arrested was 52-year-old Silas Baker Jr., also of Spring Street in London, charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place and possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle and failure to wear a seat belt. Both were taken to the Laurel County Detention Center following their arrests.

Jail records show that Roberts was released on $1,000 surety bond on Sunday afternoon. Baker was released on Saturday afternoon.

Assisting in the arrests were Deputy Mikey Ashurst and Deputy Daniel Grigsby.
