State worker faces porn charges

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A Somerset man employed by a state office in London was arrested Monday, charged with four counts of child pornography.

Gordon J. Bowers, 49, of 74 N-Linwood Dr. in Somerset, was arrested by Tom Bell of the Kentucky Attorney General’s office on Monday after it was discovered he was downloading child pornography onto his work computer. These actions occurred while Bowers was on state time and using state equipment to obtain “images of child sexual abuse.”

According to the citation, Bowers was an employee at the Division of Mine Reclamation in London, located at 85 State Police Road. Bowers was arrested around 12:40 p.m. at his office. Allegedly, he was actively downloading pornographic images involving children onto his computer at the time of his arrest, and had hundreds of images already in folders on his computer.

Child pornography is a Class D felony offense and violates Kentucky Revised Statute  531.335, which states “A person is guilty of possession or viewing of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor when, having knowledge of its content, character, and that the sexual performance is by a minor” and the person knowingly keeps and intentionally views the subject matter knowing that minor children are involved in the visual sexual performance. The penalty for Class D felony offenses carry a one to five year prison sentence for each incident.
