E.B. couple arrested for drugs

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — An East Bernstadt couple arrested for marijuana, prescription drugs and a large amount of cash are free on a no-cash surety bond until their preliminary hearing on Tuesday.

Barbara Rickelman, 55, and 56-year-old William Rickelman, both of 155 East Branch Road in East Bernstadt, were arrested on Thursday, and arraigned in Laurel District Court on Friday morning. District Judge John Chappell set a $5,000 surety bond, to be posted by family members, for both Rickelmans and jail records indicate that both were released just after 1 p.m. on Friday. A condition of the surety bond, however, was the couple be monitored on the MCR program, which is set up through the Pre-Trial Services, until their hearing on Tuesday.

Barbara Rickelman was arrested after a routine traffic stop by Kentucky State Police Trooper Ryan Loudermilk around 4 p.m. on Thursday. Loudermilk stopped Rickelman’s 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee and smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle after he made contact with the driver. When a check of Rickelman’s license was conducted, it was discovered she had an active warrant against her.

Rickelman was placed under arrest and was found in possession of various prescription medications. Inside the vehicle were more prescription drugs, marijuana and cash. She was charged with trafficking in marijuana, first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, a bench warrant and a traffic violation.

The quantity of illegal drugs in Rickelman’s possession sent other KSP Troopers to the Rickelman’s home for a continuing investigation, which turned up even more drugs. William Rickelman was arrested at his residence and charged with trafficking in marijuana and first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance after troopers located 1.5 pounds of processed marijuana, numerous prescription medications, and a large amount of cash.
