Domestic leads to drug arrest

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A variety of drugs and drug paraphernalia were discovered after Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic violence call on Saturday afternoon.

Deputy Kevin Berry, Deputy Shane Rice and Deputy Robbie Grimes initially went to Old Hare Road near the KEV Road intersection, eight miles north of London, around 1:48 p.m. Saturday to answer a domestic dispute call.

On arriving at the scene, the deputies found 25-year-old Ervin Johnson of Franklin St. in Barbourville and his wife, 22-year-old Shalane Johnson, of the same address, standing in the middle of the road. Neighbors said they saw Ervin Johnson chasing his wife and a struggle between the couple.

Both were arrested for the domestic dispute, but additional charges came after several different controlled substances and paraphernalia were also found.

Ervin Johnson resisted arrest and, while en route to the jail, he kicked the windows and doors of the police cruiser. Once at the jail, he was found in possession of two syringes. He is now charged with fourth-degree assault, domestic violence; public intoxication of controlled substances, resisting arrest, first-degree promoting contraband; first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, first offense. He also had a large amount of cash.

Shalane Johnson was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, first offense; second-degree possession of a controlled substance, and first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, first offense. She possessed hydrocodone pills, marijuana, a glass pipe, rolling papers, two needles, a plastic bag with used coffee filters that tested positive for amphetamines, six plastic bag corners that field tested positive for amphetamines, and digital scales.

A child present at the altercation between the Johnsons was placed with relatives after Social Services was called to the scene.
