Woman indicted for stabbing incident

A domestic argument that turned violent resulted in the indictment of a Laurel woman.

Michelle Smith, 41, also known as Michelle Root, of 51 Gotham Lane in London, was named in a two-count indictment returned by a Laurel grand jury on Friday.

Smith is charged with stabbing a man five times with a butcher knife after an alleged argument between the two on Aug. 16. She is also charged with being a second-degree persistent felony offender. She was sentenced to two years in prison, probated for five years, in April 2009, for assault under extreme emotional distress.

The stabbing incident took place while the two were allegedly drinking together when they had a disagreement.

After the stabbing, Michelle Smith left the scene on Line Creek Road, seven miles west of London.

When Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene, they found Gilbert Smith bleeding from his wounds. He was treated at the scene by Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, and then flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for his injuries.

The day after the stabbing, deputies located Michelle Smith at a residence on Rough Creek Road and took her into custody. She was also charged with alcohol intoxication at the time of the arrest.

Jail records indicate that Michelle Smith has remained incarcerated since her arrest and is held under a $50,000 cash bond.

An indictment is an accusation only and does not imply guilt or innocence.
