LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A man who failed to show up for court dates in both Laurel and Boone counties was jailed following a dispute with his girlfriend over the weekend.

Richard J. Elkins II, 38, of Roaden Lane in London, was charged with fourth-degree assault and failure to appear when Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies arrived to answer a complaint around 7:47 p.m. Friday.

Elkins and his girlfriend were allegedly fighting outside Elkins’ mother’s home on Roaden Lane. The girlfriend said Elkins had been drinking and had taken some illegal substances, according to the press release from the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.

The argument became violent and Elkins allegedly slapped the woman and choked her, which deputies verified when they saw red marks still on her face and throat.

Elkins was charged with failure to appear for a court date in Laurel District Court as well as a warrant in Boone County. Elkins was released on a $1,019 bond three hours after he was booked into the jail.

Assisting at the scene were Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter and other sheriff’s deputies.
