LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
According to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, preliminary autopsy reports show that Virginia M. Chumbley, 44, of Greenlawn Subdivision Road, died Wednesday of three gunshot wounds to the face.
Deputies were called to the residence, 10 miles southeast of London, around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday. A man phoned Laurel 9-1-1 dispatch and said he had shot his wife. When deputies arrived at the scene, they located Ernest Chris Chumbley, 48, of the same address, in his living room near the front door and took him into custody without incident.
Virginia Chumbley was pronounced dead at the scene by Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling. She was found in a bedroom, with multiple gunshot wounds. A pistol was recovered nearby.
Ernest Chumbley was arrested, charged with murder and lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center. He is being held under a $200,000 cash bond.
Chumbley is employed by the Laurel County School System. Representatives at North Laurel Middle School stated he was a custodian there.
In a jailhouse interview with WYMT Thursday, Chumbley said his wife of more than 20 years asked him to end her pain because she was terminally ill with breast cancer.
The cause of the shooting remains under investigation by Detective Charlie Loomis.
Assisting on the initial investigation were Sgt. Brett Reeves, Deputy Kevin Berry, Deputy Shawn Boroviak, and Deputy Shane Rice. Also assisting for the Sheriff’s Office were Sheriff Root, Capt. Rodney Van Zant, Lt. Chuck Johnson, and Deputy Gilbert Acciardo. Other agencies assisting included Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County and Laurel County Coroner Bowling.
