Ohio fugitive caught, native of East Bernstadt

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — An East Bernstadt native facing charges in Ohio was captured in eastern Laurel County Monday morning.

Ryan P. Wolfe, 28, of East Bernstadt, is lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center on charges of escaping from police custody in Ohio.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Lloyd Cochran said he received information about Wolfe’s whereabouts on Sunday evening. Around 8:35 a.m. Monday, Cochran, Trooper Robert Massie and three Laurel County deputies went to a residence on Tom Cat Trail in eastern Laurel County, where Wolfe was allegedly staying.

“He was asleep when we got there and was taken into custody without incident,” Cochran said.

Wolfe was wanted in Cincinnati on shoplifting charges — termed as larceny in Ohio. Cochran said Wolfe was in the police cruiser and managed to escape.

“He said the rear window was down so he opened the door and escaped,” Cochran said. “He said he wasn’t ready to go to jail at this point in his life, so he saw an opportunity and took it.”

Now Wolfe is charged with being a fugitive from another state, although Cochran said those charges would be dropped when Ohio officials come to pick Wolfe up and take him back to Ohio to face charges of larceny and escape there.
