Gunman disarmed in hospital parking lot

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Quick action by Laurel County Sheriff’s officials dissipated a potentially dangerous situation in Saint Joseph London’s parking lot Wednesday night.

A man who had reportedly been arguing with his wife went to get a firearm from his father’s home, threatening to kill “himself or other persons” around 7:20 p.m. The 9-1-1 call for law enforcement indicated the man, 37-year-old Richard Bryant of White Oak Road in London, could be in the hospital parking lot.

Deputy Larry Parrott received the complaint and, backed up by Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter and Deputy Robbie Grimes, went to the scene where they spotted Bryant sitting in his vehicle, armed with a black pistol. Bryant allegedly pointed the gun at Poynter as he drove by, but Poynter was able to negotiate with Bryant and talked him into putting the gun down.

However, the arrival of the man’s wife around the same time upset Bryant, who began yelling threats at her and initiated a struggle with deputies.

Bryant was taken into custody and charged with third-degree terroristic threatening, first-degree disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and menacing. He was also charged on an outstanding warrant for assault, and taken to the Laurel County Detention Center.

Sharon Hershberger, public affairs director for Saint Joseph London, said hospital officials and staff were appreciative of the quick action of the sheriff’s office in the incident.

Sheriff’s officials did not know why Bryant or his wife were in the hospital parking lot.
