LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Failing to stop at a stop sign was the first mistake leading a series of events that sent a Laurel man to jail for DUI.
Laurel County Sheriff’s Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter and Deputy Robbie Grimes observed a gold Jeep Cherokee run a stop sign at the intersection of Bolton Ridge Road and Campbell Road, seven miles south of London, around 8:30 p.m. Friday.
The vehicle then ran off the roadway and into a ditch.
When officers conducted a traffic stop, they determined the driver — 55-year-old Ellis Smith Jr., of Ky. 229 in London — was under the influence. Smith admitted having smoked marijuana. He was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence, first offense, and disregarding a stop sign.
Smith was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center following his arrest.
