Tobacco store robbers indicted

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Gray resident, Darla McCormick, 47, and 32-year-old Shawn Stehlin of Ky. 552 in Lily were indicted on Friday for the April 19 armed robbery of Brock's Tobacco Store in which they escaped the scene but were located in the Lily community just hours afterwards.

That incident took place around 8 p.m., which Stehlin allegedly donned a pair of panty hose for a mask, entered the tobacco store near the intersection of Ky. 1189 and Ky. 229 armed with a pistol and demanded money. After taking an undisclosed amount of cash, the robber fled the scene in a maroon Chevrolet Blazer driven by a female accomplice, later identified as McCormick.

The search for the robbers was aided by a witness who followed the vehicle and contacted police after seeing it in the Lily community near a store on Ky. 552.

Laurel County Sheriff's officials responding to the robbery call located the vehicle and questioned McCormick. She told police she had dropped Stehlin off at his mother's home on Ky. 552. Once police went to that residence, Stehlin resisted arrest and threatened officers. However, he was taken into custody and all the money taken from the tobacco store was recovered.

McCormick and Stehlin were also indicted for being persistent felony offenders, as both have prior convictions. Stehlin was sentenced to three years in prison in February 2011 for third-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, second offense.

McCormick's legal history is extensive and dates back to 1996 with theft by unlawful taking. Her subsequent convictions in Whitley and Laurel Circuit Courts include hindering prosecution or apprehension, trafficking a controlled substance and promoting contraband. McCormick has two 10-year sentences for first-degree trafficking a controlled substance — one in Laurel County in 2004 and the other in Boyle County in Sept. 2010. The 2010 sentence also included an additional one-year sentence for promoting contraband.

An indictment is an accusation only and does not imply guilt or innocence.
