LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A man who passed out in the floor after shooting his girlfriend in the foot was indicted on Friday.

Richard J. Lawson, 37, now faces charges of first-degree assault and first-degree wanton endangerment stemming from the incident on Locust Grove Road on Feb. 3.

Gena Smith managed to crawl to a neighbor’s home after being shot in the foot in the early morning hours of Feb. 3 and yell for help as she lay on the porch, bleeding from her wound.  Police found Lawson passed out in a rear bedroom of the home where he had inflicted the gunshot wound to his girlfriend.

The couple had been arguing prior to the shooting incident, although police reports indicate Smith tried to leave the home around 3 a.m. when Lawson opened fire with a .22 caliber pistol, striking Smith in the ankle.

The couple’s minor son was inside the residence during the argument and shooting incident.

Smith was taken to Saint Joseph London and Lawson was taken to jail, charged with first-degree assault against Smith and first-degree wanton endangerment against the minor child, who could have been injured during the gunfire.
