LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
When a man entered Ott’s Grocery carrying a shotgun on his shoulder on Tuesday, patrons and employees were immediately alarmed.
When the man began hitting himself in the head, Laurel County Dispatch received a second call about the man’s behavior.
While en route to the store, five miles west of London, deputies learned that the man had gotten into a green Dodge pickup and was headed toward London. After spotting the vehicle, deputies were quick to action, getting the man out of the truck and locating the sawed off shotgun in the vehicle.
Earnest D. Carr, 41, of Hawk Creek Road in London, was charged with defacing a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.
The shotgun’s barrel length had been cut off to a length of 13 5/8 inches and a tactical wooden handle had been added to it. The length of the gun’s barrel makes it an illegal weapon to possess. The gun also had no serial numbers on it, resulting in the charge of defacing a firearm.
Carr was scheduled for an arraignment hearing in Laurel District Court for the concealed weapon charge. A second court date is set for Oct. 30 for which Carr is held under a $5,000 surety bond. As of Thursday morning, Carr remains incarcerated in the Laurel County Detention Center.
