East Bernstadt man to face 27 years in prison

Pled guilty for manufacturing meth

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — An East Bernstadt man was convicted Thursday of manufacturing methamphetamine and being a second-degree persistent felony offender, according to Jackie Steele, the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Laurel and Knox counties.

Freddy Scalf, 53, entered a guilty plea on October 11 and faces 27 years in prison with his sentencing set for November 16.

Michael D. Pratt, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, who prosecuted the case said Scalf was in possession of the materials for making meth on July 25, 2011, when Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies searched a location where Scalf had a tent set up. Deputies went to the location after Scalf was videotaped manufacturing meth as part of an investigation into the trafficking of meth.

Scalf has an extensive criminal history starting in 2001 and going through 2009 with convictions for facilitation to manufacture meth, possession of meth precursors, first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, and first-degree possession of a controlled substance.

Steele said this case is just another example of the sentences that people convicted for manufacturing meth in the 27th Judicial Circuit can expect. Individuals involved in the illegal production and distribution of meth will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and the evidence.

The agencies involved in the investigation and prosecution of Scalf were the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office and the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for the 27th Judicial Circuit.
