Prank 9-1-1 call lands Laurel man in jail

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The sirens and lights of emergency personnel responding to a report of a possible death echoed through the eastern section of the county on Monday evening.

But when an ambulance, Laurel County Sheriff John Root, Chief Deputy Eddy Sizemore and other deputies arrived at the reported scene on Sherry Street, six miles east of London, they found nothing.

Their quick action came after a 9-1-1 call to Laurel Dispatch Center just before 7 p.m. that a male and his girlfriend had had an altercation and the man had strangled his girlfriend.

The caller said the female was not breathing.

After asking questions and conducting an investigation, it was determined that the call was false.

But the investigation continued into the following day and it was then the police found the culprit who had made the call after having a disagreement with another family member.

Michael E. Jones, 58, of Hicks Lane in London, was already in jail on charges of menacing, fleeing or evading police, and disorderly conduct on an unrelated incident. After he admitted making the 9-1-1 call, he was additionally charged with falsely reporting an incident.
