Shoplifting scheme spoiled

A plan to steal items from the Corbin Wal-Mart on Saturday backfired on a London couple.

Now 44-year-old Tommy Martin of Jones Road in London and 35-year-old Crystal Overbey are facing charges for theft by unlawful taking - shoplifting after they were caught with items they had not paid for.

Deputies Charlie Johnson and Kevin Berry made the arrests around 9:43 p.m. after the store’s Loss Prevention team  detained Martin, who possessed over $191 of merchandise he had not paid for. Martin told deputies he was stealing the items to sell them.

The deputies also arrested Overbey, who was waiting in the store’s parking lot. Overbey was arrested for public intoxication of controlled substances because she appeared to be intoxicated and admitted using methamphetamine — although she said it had not been that day.

Both were lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center after their arrests.
