LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —

A July 4th accident that sent five people to hospitals — and a 12-year-old to the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital — for injuries resulted in the driver of one of the vehicles being indicted for assault.

Ruth Ann Marcum, also known as Ruth Ann France, 39, of 399 Verbena Dr. in Corbin, was indicted by a Laurel grand jury on Friday for five counts of first-degree assault.

Marcum was driving a GMC Sierra pickup going westbound on Ky. 770 around 5 p.m. when she traveled into the eastbound lane, hitting a Chrysler 300 head-on. The two vehicles came to rest  in the eastbound lane, and Marcum and four people in the Chrysler were taken to local hospitals for their injuries.

Danny E. Barnett, 63, of Corbin and his passengers, 64-year-old Marsha Barnett, 40-year-old Becky Barnett and 44-year-old Jeffery Barnett were all admitted to Baptist Health Corbin with serious injuries from the crash. A 12-year-old passenger was later taken to the Lexington hospital.

Marcum was taken to Saint Joseph London, but was treated and released. She was then charged with driving under the influence and prescription of a controlled substance not in the proper container. Due to the severity of the injuries of the other people, however, the first-degree assault charges were added the next day.

An indictment is an accusation only and does not indicate guilt or innocence.
