LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
It took Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies more than a half-hour to convince a shooting victim to get medical help following a self-inflicted wound on Friday.
Ricky Joe Clark, 53, of Locust Grove Road, seven miles west of London, sat on his front porch, still armed with his rifle, when Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter, and Deputies Mikey Ashurst, Robbie Grimes and Daniel Grigsby arrived on the scene around 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
Clark had reportedly shot himself in the chest after an argument with his wife, and was refusing to allow emergency personnel to assist him. Personnel with Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County sat at a distance from the injured man, who held police at bay for 40 minutes until Sgt. Poynter talked to him and until deputies could wrestle the gun away.
Once the scene was safe for emergency personnel to approach, Clark was treated at the scene by members of Ambulance Inc., before Clark was flown from the scene. He was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for further treatment of his wound.
The investigation into the shooting incident is continuing.
