LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A purse snatcher was caught Sunday, Nov. 25 after robbing a London woman who was loading her groceries in her car.

The London Police Department arrested Freddy Scalf Jr., 20, of 6565 W. Laurel Road, for theft by unlawful taking, second-degree fleeing or evading police and third-degree criminal trespassing.

After shopping at the Walmart Supercenter in London, a woman was loading her groceries into her vehicle when Scalf took her purse out of her shopping cart.  At the time, several good Samaritans responded to the woman as she screamed at the perpetrator and attempted to catch him as he fled on foot toward a nearby thicket behind Golden Corral.  An employee at the restaurant attempted to stop Scalf, causing Scalf to throw the victim’s purse at him.

London Police officers located Scalf after a two-hour search around the Walmart and West Fifth Street area.  Officer Eric Stallard located the perpetrator trying to break into a vehicle within the search perimeter.  Scalf admitted to hiding the stolen money and items, which were then returned to the victim.

According to the police report, Scalf took several items out of Reams’ purse before discarding it, including more than $200 in cash.

Officer Justin Roby is investigating the incident.

Assisting at the scene were Chief Stewart Walker, Major Derek House, Sgt. Darrell Kilburn, Sgt. Danny Robinson, Officers Jeremy Shell, Eric Stallard, Jacob Bormann, Ryan Jackson, Justin Hopkins and Kentucky State Police K-9 Officer Jason McCowan and his K-9, Jenga.
