Increased patrols net 3 DUI arrests

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — With the 2012 statistics for fatal accidents within the county doubling those of 2011, Laurel County Sheriff’s officials are taking extra steps to ensure that drivers are not risking lives on the county’s roadways.

These patrols resulted in the arrests of three persons believed to be driving under the influence over the first week of 2013.

Erica Fox, 26, of Casey Road in Corbin, was arrested on Sunday, Jan. 6 after she approached a road block near old U.S. 25 at Slate Ridge Road, six miles south of London. Deputy Kirk Mays determined Fox was under the influence of intoxicants. She was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence and endangering the welfare of a minor.

On Friday night, Jan. 4, Mays arrested 44-year-old Tommy Smith of Payne Trail in London after a traffic accident on Tom Cat Trail around 11:30 p.m. Smith was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, reckless driving, operating on a DUI-suspended license, and failure of owner to maintain required insurance or security.

On Sunday, Mays responded to another complaint of a car in a ditch on Ky. 1006 around 4:30 p.m. When Mays arrived at the scene, he determined 44-year-old Annette J. Bouharb of Ky. 1232 in Corbin was under the influence. She was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence, reckless driving, and failure to produce an insurance card. She was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.

Statistics in Kentucky show that intoxicated drivers are involved in more crashes, more serious crashes, and more fatal crashes than those who are not drinking. Sheriff John Root assures the motoring public that his deputies will continue to place a major emphasis on arresting and removing intoxicated drivers from Laurel County’s roadways to help make our roads safer.
