LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
The annual Thanksgiving Food Basket campaign has begun. St. William Catholic Church is again collecting food items for needy families this November.
“People wonder why we choose Thanksgiving rather than Christmas,” Marilla Campbell of St. William Catholic Church. “This is the time when resources are being cut down, when seasonal employees lose their jobs and when electric bills go up. People have to choose between food and getting their kids an extra coat.”
While the community filled 300 baskets last year, Campbell said the needs and the requests increase every successive year.
Each basket includes a 5 pound bag of sugar; 5 pound bag of flour; stuffing; 16-ounce canned vegetables such as peas, green beans, corn, cranberry sauce, yams, carrots; canned fruit; 1-pound bag of dried pinto beans, and boxed macaroni and cheese.
Items for food baskets may be dropped off at the church. The Thanksgiving Baskets will be distributed on November 20 in time for the holiday.
