South watches 3-0 lead disappear
Lady Cards fall 6-4 to Danville
Twenty eight minutes into Thursday night’s game against Danville, the South Laurel Lady Cardinals looked to have things well in hand with a 3-0 lead.
Then it all fell apart.
The Lady Admirals scored four goals over the final 10 minutes of the first half, then added two more in the second half to take a 6-4 win and spoil South Laurel’s Senior Night. It was also South’s third straight loss.
Before the game, South honored seniors Sabrina Mabson, Kara and Karinne Marcum and Meghan Stallcup.
South Laurel (12-6-1) started out strong, with Ginger Johnson providing the offensive spark. In the first four minutes, she had two good shots on goal, plus a nice cross that set up a good opportunity, only no teammates were there to receive the ball.
In the 11th minute, Johnson blasted a hard shot that keeper Emily Jacobsen stopped, but couldn’t control the rebound. Katie White was there to pounce on the loose ball and give the Lady Cards a 1-0 lead.
A minute later, Sloane Salisbury sent a nice ball to Jessie Perkins, who fired a shot from about 18 yards out to make the score 2-0. In the 28th minute, a White corner kick found Johnson for a 3-0 lead.
Danville (10-6-2) started to gain momentum a minute after that goal, when Lindsey Walton’s header was saved by keeper Stephanie Fawbush. At the half hour mark, a Danville free kick found Walton, who scored this time to cut the lead to 3-1.
Three minutes later, the Lady Admirals were awarded a penalty kick, and Bethany Schulz converted from the spot, bringing her team to within one, 3-2.
An own goal by South Laurel tied the match one minute later, when Rachel Rigsby scored in the 37th minute to give Danville a 4-3 half time lead.
Danville added two more goals in the second half to take the 6-4 win.
The Lady Cards will face Corbin today at 4 p.m. in Middlesboro in the first round of the girls’ district tournament.
