South boys sweep past Middlesboro, Bell County

Cardinals win in tennis action

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —

The South Laurel boys’ tennis team picked up two big wins recently, beating Middlesboro on April 12 and Bell County on April 13.

The Cards blanked both the Yellowjackets and the Bobcats, 9-0.

“This was just another good win for our kids,” coach Jon Green said of the victory over Bell County. “We came out focused and played well from the beginning and that carried into the later matches. I was very pleased with the way the exhibition went—Tyler (Kirby) and Austin (Phelps) are both up and comers and will help our program if they continue to improve.” The duo beat Free/A. Osborne, 8-5.

Blake Walden rolled in singles action, beating D.Yates, 8-0. Dustin Herron, Mason Smith, Derek Turner, Sikandar Niazi and David Herron all won their singles matches.

Smith and Turner teammed to beat Yates/Free, 8-1, in doubles.

The Cards also had an easy time with Middlesboro, winning 9-0.

“This was our second match of the year and a great improvement over our win against Whitley County,” Green said. “Even though we won that first match, there were a lot of nerves to get out. Today, the kids just went out and played.”

Walden beat N. Robinson, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match. Turner and Smith, the No. 1 doubles team, beat Robinson/Ausmus, 8-4.

South was scheduled to host North Laurel last night, and will travel to take on Corbin April 19 in boys’ action.
