Mostly smoke damage

Bush Fire Dept. puts out fire on John Creek Road

Just after 1 p.m. Wednesday, Bush Fire Department was called to the home of Aldys Gay at 199 John Creek Road to battle a house fire.

Bush Fire Chief Don Minton said when the first units arrived on the scene, smoke was coming from the living room area.

“A neighbor who had come to help had broke out the window and was using a garden hose on the fire,” Minton said. “He was just trying to help but when he broke the window he gave the fire more air.”

Within about five minutes, Minton said firefighters had the flames knocked down. However, they were forced to pull down parts of the ceiling in the living room area to ensure the fire was extinguished.

“The house has that blown in insulation so when we pulled the ceiling down, it looked worse than it was,” Minton said.

No one was injured in the blaze. Minton said there is smoke damage throughout the house, along with water and fire damage in the living room area.

“It is mostly smoke damage,” Minton said. “When you have a fire, the smoke just goes through the house.”

In speaking with the homeowner, Minton said the cause of the fire is believed to be a candle that was left burning.

“She said she doesn’t remember blowing it out,” Minton said. “The hot spot of the fire was next to the couch where the candle was.”

In addition to the fire department, a unit from Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County responded.
