Former resident proud of his hometown

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Dear Laurel County and London officials:

My wife and I visited friends and relatives in your area for 10 days in early October, as we have done many times over the years. I grew up in Laurel County but left at age 18 and never lived here since. That is not necessarily by my choosing, but career choices lead me to other places. However, Laurel County has always been “home” to me.

We camped in the Levi Jackson State Park campgrounds. The campgrounds are clean with excellent service and facilities at reasonable prices. What a wonderful family resource for the residents of Laurel and surrounding counties. Luckily we were there during the campground wide “garage sale” giving us an opportunity to meet and visit with many of the other campers.

It was also our good luck to be there during the Welcome Home Vietnam Veteran celebration. We stood on Main Street and witnessed thousands of people waving and clapping as the veterans rode by acknowledging the honor bestowed upon them with waves (and some tears) of their own. I felt deep gratitude for the vets and some trepidation for the very young men and women representing several school military groups in the parade. Let’s hope their future is more peaceful than the present.

Downtown London looks beautiful all dressed up in shrubs, trees and flowers. I don’t know of a better looking town in the South and I have seen many. The person or people responsible for the beautification of the city deserve many thanks.

I want to say thanks to some special people we met. An accident caused me to visit the London Dental Center. Dr. Jerry Mays and his staff welcomed me, got me into a chair quickly and much to my relief made the temporary repairs. My local dentist called their work exemplary. Also, we visited the Gondolier restaurant where Mr. Jones and his friendly staff feed us some delicious Italian dishes at surprisingly low prices. People like these are what makes our area so great.

Needless to say, I am proud of my hometown. Thank you!
