Thank you to volunteers of Operation Preparation

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — To the editor:

The Laurel County School District Staff and Students wish to express their appreciation to the many volunteers who recently participated in Operation Preparation activities throughout the district.

Operation Preparation is observed each March in Kentucky to highlight the focus that education is preparation for future success.  Elementary schools introduce students to a variety of career possibilities at their “Career Fairs”. Individuals currently working in various careers in our community volunteer a day to explain how a good education is vital in their work.

Each middle school provides a “Reality Store” experience for all eighth grade students.

The “Reality Store” is a one-day culminating event where students are challenged to apply the real-life skills they have learned in the classroom. Again, volunteers from the local commerce community work the “stores” to sell the students everything their “pretend family” would need to live.

Both North and South High invite community representatives working in each of the 16 career clusters to participate in a panel discussion of their work.  Students attend panel sessions matching the areas of their greatest interest after completing career interest surveys in their online Individual Learning Plan (ILP).  Students can interact with individuals who work today in the career areas to which the students aspire in their future.

Each of these opportunities is a collaborative effort between the schools and the community for the benefit of the students.  We are grateful for the many community individuals who so graciously gave of their time and expertise for the good of students.  We would like to individually name each one, but space does not allow for the extensive list. Without community interest and support none of these events would have been possible.  We appreciate every way our community is helping us to do great things for kids.

Sincerely,

Monica Smith

Director of Secondary Education
