A London woman, who allegedly kicked a deputy jailer in the stomach and threatened the jailer and her family, pleaded not guilty Monday in Laurel District Court.
Amanda Reid, 32, appeared before Senior Judge Michael Harrod for arraignment, on charges of third-degree terroristic threatening, third-degree assault on a corrections officer, second-degree disorderly conduct and public intoxication.
Reid’s attorney Doug Benge waived formal arraignment and entered a not guilty plea on her behalf.
Reid was brought into the Laurel County Detention Center just after midnight Saturday on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct.
According to jail officials, Reid appeared to be enraged and was cursing the jail staff.
As a result, Reid was placed in a detoxification cell, but began kicking the door while continuing to curse at the staff. Deputy jailers entered the cell with the intention of securing Reid in a restraint chair.
“Upon trying to place in chair, inmate kicked officer McFarland in the stomach,” Deputy Jailer Lisa McFarland stated in the arrest report.
As McFarland and other deputy jailers tried to secure Reid, she allegedly continued to try to kick McFarland in the torso. However, Reid was finally secured in the chair.
“After restrained, inmate stated, ‘You white b****, I will kill you when I get out,’” McFarland stated.
“’Just wait, I will get you and your family and hurt them bad.’”
Benge requested a reduction of Reid’s bond, which had been set at $5,000 fully-secured, meaning $5,000 cash or $10,000 worth of property could be used to secure her release.
Benge asked the court to consider amending the bond to $5,000, post 10 percent. Harrod denied that motion, but agreed to amend the bond to $1,000 cash.
Harrod set the case for a preliminary hearing at 11 a.m. May 13, at which time the court will consider whether there is sufficient cause to present the case to a Laurel County Grand Jury.
