London driver killed on I-75

Tommy Kelly dies in Rockcastle County crash

By Dean Manning
Staff Writer

A chain-reaction wreck on Interstate 75 in Rockcastle County claimed the life of a London man.

Kentucky State Police officials said Tommy Kelley, 48, of London, a driver for Somerset Food Service, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, which took place at 12:46 a.m. Monday at the 68 mile marker.

KSP Trooper Don Trosper, public affairs officer at Post 11 in London, said the incident began on the southbound side when a passenger car and a van made contact.

“The passenger car came to a controlled stop on the southbound shoulder on the roadway while the van crossed the median and came to an uncontrolled stop in the right northbound lane,” Trosper stated.

While no one was injured in that collision, traffic on the northbound side began maneuvering to avoid the van.

In the ensuing confusion, police stated the tractor-trailer driven by Kelly, which was traveling south, struck the rear of a Ford pick-up truck, overturned and slid into a concrete bridge pillar. A passenger in the vehicle, whose name was not released, and the driver of the pick-up truck were taken to Rockcastle County hospital for treatment of injuries.

KSP Traffic Crash Re-constructionist Trooper Greg Hill and KSP Traffic Crash Reconstructionist Detective Mike Bowling are continuing the investigation.

Assisting at the scene were Trooper Fred Penn-ington, Rockcastle County Coroner’s Office, Rockcastle County She-riff’s deputies, Rockcastle County EMS, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement and the Kentucky State Highway Department.
