Unattended food causes fire that destroys trailer

By Tara Kaprowy
Staff Writer

But for a night stand and a filing cabinet filled with some photos, Edward Yaden lost everything Tuesday, after a fire roared through his Old State Road trailer.

Campground Fire Chief Steve Bruner said the fire started around 3 p.m. after Yaden had put two hamburgers on the stove to cook.

“Then he went outside, started messing around outside and forgot about it,” Bruner said.

Meanwhile, Yaden’s relative, a boy estimated to be about 16 years old, was sleeping in a bedroom inside.

About 30 minutes later, smoke started filling the kitchen, waking the teenager who escaped through the front door. Around the same time, Yaden saw the smoke.

Campground and Lily fire departments were paged to the scene. Bruner said it took about two hours to extinguish the fire.

Bruner said the trailer was a total loss.

“He had no insurance or anything, so we sent him to the Red Cross,” he said.

Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County also assisted at the scene.
