School construction projects on schedule

by Dean Manning

Construction at North Laurel High School and Colony, Johnson and Keavy elementary schools are on track to be completed by the summer.

Kevin Cheek of Sherman-Carter-Barnhart Architects and David Jackson of Hacker Brothers Construction said the $11 million projects are moving along as scheduled. The projects include adding additional classrooms and upgrading bathrooms to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

At North Laurel, Cheek and Jackson said the foundation work is complete and workers are getting ready to start the masonry work.

At Johnson Elementary, workers are getting ready to pour the floor for the addition off of the cafeteria and masonry work will follow soon after.

At Keavy Elementary, workers have begun the excavation work on the project.

At Colony Elementary, workers have completed the retaining walls and began the masonry work in preparation for pouring of concrete. In addition to adding classrooms, the project calls for the installation of a security entrance.

“Progress is good,” Hacker said the construction projects.

The projects are funded with $11.5 million in building revenue bonds. Superintendent David Young said previously that it is restricted money that may only be used for building projects.

In other business the school board:

• Approved the 2009-10 Athletic Handbook

• Approved the 2009-10 Employee Handbook

• Approved the creation of two special education assistant positions and the re-creation of two special education assistant positions.
