Laurel County unemployment decreases in September

While the unemployment rate for Laurel County went down in September, it was still significantly higher than for the same month in 2008.

According to estimates released Monday by the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, Laurel County’s unemployment rate was 10.1 percent in September. That is down from 10.5 percent in August, but up nearly 4 percent as compared to a year ago. That rate for September 2008 was 6.3 percent.

Unemployment rates rose in all 120 Kentucky counties between September 2008 and September 2009. The state rate was 10.4 percent for September, compared to 10.8 percent in August and 6.5 percent for September 2008.

Fayette County recorded the lowest jobless rate in the commonwealth at 7.7 percent. Magoffin County recorded the state’s highest unemployment rate — 21.4 percent.

Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian labor force statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks. The statistics in this news release are not seasonally adjusted to allow for comparisons between United States, state and county figures.
